There was a little caterpillar. He was the cutest thing ever. He was green with orange dots. He had beautiful inquisitive eyes and a smile that would light up a room. Caterpillar loved his mom and dad. He felt safe around them. They always seem to know what he needed without him having to say anything. They knew when he felt sleepy, hungry, thirsty, sick or happy. As he got older, Caterpillar had lots of feelings, needs and ideas he wanted to share with the world, but the words wouldn’t come out of his mouth. Caterpillar felt more and more frustrated with the people around him, who could not understand him. He felt so different and could not find anyone who looked like him. Caterpillar decided to live in a cocoon where he did not have to look at anyone or talk to anyone. Although frustrated, Caterpillar was also quite comfortable in his cocoon. Things changed and his parents had a hard time figuring out, if he was sleepy, hungry, sick, happy or thirsty. Time went by and still…no words. They felt so sad that they could not communicate with him. So they went around looking for help… Someone who would be able to get Caterpillar out of his cocoon. Someone who would help Caterpillar express his wants, his needs and his emotions. Someone who would make him realize that he was not alone, but very much surrounded by people who loved him. Together, they made progress little by little; and “just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly!” A beautiful butterfly with bright and vibrant colors. These unique colors were part of who he was and helped him make friends, express himself, protest and request whenever he needed to do so.

If you pay attention, you will see him fly around you as he puts a smile on your face.
